“She kept the formal obsequies — dropping a deep curtsy each time they met — but otherwise kept her distance,” he wrote.

In the years that followed, things would get a lot more complex between the two sides, especially given Princess Diana's troubling relationship alongside Prince Charles.

Princess Diana And Queen Elizabeth Had An Up And Down Type Relationship

Reports tend to be conflicting when it comes to The Queen and Princess Diana's relationship. According to E News, Princess Diana had a huge deal of respect for The Queen, "I admire her," Diana said. "I long to get inside her mind and talk to her, and I will. I've always said to her: 'I'll never let you down but I cannot say the same for your son.' She took it quite well. She does relax with me."

In turn, E News would further state that Queen Elizabeth trusted Diana, especially when it came to her ability to form connections.

"From the beginning, the queen was supportive of Diana's instincts when it came to forging connections, such as when she asked the monarch's permission to represent the family at the Princess Grace of Monaco's funeral in 1982, the former Grace Kelly having been very kind to her when a newly engaged Diana first met her."

On the flip side, New York Post would further report that things got difficult for the two sides, particularly when Princess Diana grew emotional about her relationship alongside Prince Charles.

"The princess cried three times in a half an hour while she was waiting to see you.’ The queen replied, ‘I had her for an hour — and she cried nonstop. Queen Elizabeth apparently wanted to help her daughter-in-law, but didn’t know how."

Ultimately, it is believed that being from different generations also did not help the level of communication between the two sides throughout their relationship.

Nonetheless, despite all the ups and downs, the Queen was heartbroken just as the rest of the world over Princess Diana's passing.

On August 31st, 1997, Princess Diana passed away in Paris unexpectedly due to a car crash. The world wept from the loss and that included the Queen, who issued a statement of her own.
